That's ok for After Burner Climax since the alternative would've been no console release at all but Sonic is a popular character and franchise despite Sega's recent attempts to kill him by working Sonic Team like a sonic-game-sweatshop. A 2D Sonic game totally justifies a retail release and I don't really appreciate that Sega is only willing to throw old school Sonic fans a bone in downloadable form exclusively.
Also disturbing in my opinion is that the game is being released on WiiWare which places further limits on "Sonic 4" since I'm certain that Nintendo's memory limits are smaller than Microsoft and Sony. This could also mean that "Sonic 4" will not be truly HD but an upscaled WiiWare title instead. I don't think Sega had to bring Sonic back to 2D in order to make a good Sonic game either. I think Sega just had to make...well, a good Sonic game, though not necessarily in 2D. I'm also not too wild about the name "Sonic 4" either because that makes for extremely high expectations for this Sonic game(the Genesis Sonics are timeless classics), it sets the bar higher than I think present day Sonic Team can handle and I think that that chapter of the 2D numbered Sonics was over. Needless to say, they better not screw this one up now that they decided to call it "Sonic 4"...

I've always hoped they would make 'Sonic Adventure 3', but that didn't happen and never will and so my hopes in playing a decent Sonic game, does lie in Sonic the Hedgehog 4. I have no problem with Sonic 4 being a downloadable game, a retail copy with a nice box cover would be nice.
Game companies now are getting a bit obsessed with digital distribution, although it will take maybe a decade or so for it to take over massively. The whole flaw of it at this moment is not getting refunds and that used-game sales dramatically drop. I always buy games-on-discs, because I like the box art of the game covers and you can trade in the game after you have completed it and you cannot do that with downloadable games. The only digital distribution system I like is Steam, because you can get decent PC games at great prices.
For Sonic 4, it is likely to be cheap and so being a downloadable title doesn't put me off in any way. It would be nice for Sega to distribute it to retail outlets, but you never know, they might decide at last minute, I'm just glad a new Sonic title has been announced that can wipe the rubbish titles from my head and hopefully be a good one to remain in my head for a long time.
