Uncharted 2 Beta Thoughts

 qhsky Uncharted 2 Beta Thoughts

I was one of the lucky last few people able to snatch a code for the Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, (thanks @naughty_dog) and for the short while I’ve been playing it, I’ve realized just how lucky I was and why so many people were after the codes.

Uncharted 2 Online

First of all, Uncharted 2 is a stunning game, from as soon as you start, there is a visual explosion of amazing colours and textures. Just looking at the screen is a gift in its own right. The setting of the game adds so much to this also, it is both a beautiful backdrop, and a gaming paradise perfect for jumps and climbs. Read the rest of this entry »

Modern Warfare 2: Can it compete?

HT7jK Modern Warfare 2: Can it compete?

As the sixth entry in the Call of Duty franchise, this next game brings back developer Infinity Ward as the general in command (thank god). So, they’ve brought back Infinity Ward, and ditched Treyarch. Good decision in my view. Maybe it was the fact I bought World at War for PC, but I hate it. I’ve definitely learnt my lesson not to buy games (apart from The Sims, but that’s another story.) for the PC, as I’m just so comfortable with the solidarity of the graphics of a console, and the controller instead of a mouse and keyboard…

Anyway, back to Modern Warfare 2. Why has the choice been made to bring back Infinity Ward? Maybe it was the sheer success of CoD4, and the failure of CoD5? Personally, I think it’s going to have to be that. CoD4 was so much more successful and in my view, more of a pleasure to play. Read the rest of this entry »

Now Is the Time to Buy a PS3

P1Qwn Now Is the Time to Buy a PS3

On the fence?  Can’t decide which next-gen video game console to buy?  Well, now, more than ever, is the time to pick up a PlayStation 3 from the local Walmart.  “For the first time since the console launched, I really think there’s more reason to buy a PS3 than the 360” Signal Hill Capital Group analyst Todd Greenwald told Bloomberg.  Here’s why: software, hardware, and price.

A well known fact among the gaming community is that the PS3 dominates as far as the hardware aspect goes, but up until recently has struggled against the other top competitors, the Wii and Xbox 360, in the software department.  Although it’s servers are often plagued with lag and its “hardcore” fan base primarily is made up of 8 year-olds playing Super Mario Kart, the Wii has lead in the console wars since this past December, with a whopping total around 50 million units sold world-wide. Despite many of its games being revivals of past franchises, long-time Nintendo fanatics refuse to let their Wiis go by the waste side, and continue to support it.

The Xbox 360 on the other hand, has been home to blockbuster exclusives including the Halo franchise, Gears of War, and Mass Effect to name a few, giving people a legitimate reason to purchase and use the console.  Furthermore, Xbox Live has  experienced huge success over the past few years since being revamped for the 360.  Constant firmware updates and content additions to the store on a regular basis, partnered with the new Xbox Live “Experience” implemented last year, have kept the service fresh and appealing to its wide range of users.

But, the tide is shifting.   Read the rest of this entry »

Why Call of Duty 4 Is Still King

Posted on June 21st, 2009 None tag, up to you
YCsRO Why Call of Duty 4 Is Still King

It’s been just over 18 months since the November 10th 2007 release date of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (in the UK) and yet, I still find myself unable to let it go - like Heather Mills with Paul McCartney’s fortune. I’ve tried to wean myself off the Infinity Ward branded drug by buying many other FPS games, yet to no avail. I still need a title with an online multiplayer component to rival it.

Christmas 2007 arrived; Valve’s fantastic Orange Box came and failed to steal my attention. Although Team Fortress was a thoroughly entertaining and unique experience, it included 6 maps of which only one seemed to ever be played. Can’t think which one that was (BLOODY 2FORT!). I adored the characters in the game and the character of the game itself, yet EA’s unforgivably bad servers undid all of Valve’s hard work, driving the final nail into the proverbial coffin.

Epic’s Unreal Tournament 3 arrived a week after, promising ground breaking graphics and amazing gameplay. It was my first foray into the series, knowing it was very much a twitch shooter dominated by mouse and keyboard wielding Epic fanatics - I held my breath and took the plunge. Safe to say that it was moral breaking at the very least, being sniped by rocket launchers repeatedly and pwned to within millimeters of my sanity. I thought that I’d be able to play easy level bots and pretend I was good, but I could not. UT3 had run it’s course.

CEO of Activision questions future Sony support

Posted on June 19th, 2009 None tag, up to you

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick is starting to believe that it isn’t worth it releasing his companies games on the current generation Playstation consoles. Recently, in an interview with British newspaper The Times he had the following to say; “I’m getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don’t make it easy for me to support the platform. It’s expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better.”

Kotick stated that he would like a price cut on the PS3, citing a probable drop in attach rates. We can only imagine how Sony feels about being told its prices are too high by the CEO of the company behind (according to retailers) the $200 Band Hero box.

Later in the interview, Kotick states “When we look at 2010 and 2011,we might want to consider if we support the console - and the PSP [portable] too.” It’s worth noting that, both Call of Duty 4 and World at War moved fewer copies on PS3 than on Xbox — but both broke a million on PS3, making Activision millions.

In my opinion, dropping support for the Playstation consoles is too drastic a step to take, and Kotick is just mouthing off in a hope to get Sony to drop the price so that he can shift more games. As the company is still making a profit from the games it sells on the playstation, not releasing games on it would be a silly mistake to make.
